Pierre Maurice Marie Duhem (10 June 1861 – 14 September 1916) French physicist and philosopher of science.
Duhem adopted an instrumentalist view of science. He gave his title to the Quine-Duhem thesis, which holds that for any given set of observations there are an innumerably heavy total of explanations. So empirical grounds to believe just can not click the revision of a theory. He farther found that the failure of the theory to produce exact predictions implies the failure of the theory as a whole, non of a particular a portion. These views were late adopted by W. V. Quine.
He is likewise known for very much operate on the history of science in the Mediaeval time. This revolved virtually all about a time period around Europe from either 1200 to the Reformation. This related to his hard Catholic faith.
